Early Unraveling of The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown - Holly Black

Title: The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

Series: N/A
Author: Holly Black
Publication Date: September 3, 2013

Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave. One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret.

Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

My Thoughts

A copy was provided through NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review

I have been seeing quite a few mixed reviews out there in the blogosphere for Coldest Girl in Coldtown, so I wasn't too excited anymore to read it and I think this in and of itself is what allowed me to enjoy it as much as I did.

My biggest issue, and what most reader might have a problem with as well, was the writing style. It's not that it was badly written, it was just that the way Black decided to write made it hard for me to really get immersed in the story. It's not only written in third person, but also there is just something a bit off about the whole thing. Like you are detached from everything that's happening, and yet at the same time I understand for what kind of tone Black was going for to tell her story and in that case she succeeded 100%. It just made it hard to feel connected to the events that were happening.

Next up we have Tana. I'm still not quite sure I like her or not. I'm not indifferent towards her, I just like some aspects of her personality and others not so much, mostly because I just can't relate to that side of her. Tana is basically an adrenaline junkie even if it isn't said that bluntly. She likes danger, she likes feeling that rush and keeping some kind of sense of control. This fixation of hers is what leads her to rescue her jerk of an ex-boyfriend (which can I just say, that was one of the most dysfunctional relationships I have read about in YA) and the vampire that looked like he required some saving as well.

Once that pivotal decision has been made, and the only that is somewhat questionable, the rest of the plotline flows quite nicely. We get some nice world-building and find out the story behind the Coldtowns and how it all came about. We are told how vampires in this world behave and what they go through during the transformation. I had been afraid that Tana was going to turn out to be just another special snowflake character but it isn't the case here and that's what I liked about her. She is just a girl trying to do the right thing after having had a very bad experience with what happens to people going Cold. I'm just going to say I really liked Tana after she got to Coldtown and the twists and turns that occur were excellent  and I wasn't even expecting the major one. I only figured it out like a page behind the big reveal. Books that can keep me guessing that long or surprise me that well get a lot of love from me. If the writing style had been somewhat different this could easily have been a 5 star read.

I haven't mentioned any of the side characters nor the major vamp character and that's mostly because I want you guys to figure them out yourselves  I'm just going to say that they were all well done characters even if I didn't like some of them. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a book worth reading, just the writing style a try, because the story being told is an entertaining one.

My Thoughts

I loved the first book even with the killer cliffhanger that it had. Thankfully this one doesn't end in such a fashion. Actually it ends in a very depressing tone.

That's a lie the whole book has a depressing tone. Something horrible is happening to EVERYONE in this book. It was overwhelming. They were being mean to each other, and all their families were having issues, and it was all just too depressing. With that said, even with everything bad going on around Kami she was still strong, and was holding on quite well. She is a strong and resilient girl. She is also a very stupid one.

She has the quick thinking and spunky attitude, and I actually do love her humor and how loyal she is to the ones she loves. My problem is she seems to be making just one dumb decision after the other, specially concerning Jared. For having been in his head during her whole life it's as if she suddenly doesn't know the guy anymore, like he is a different species or something. She is so freaking oblivious to what is going to with him is exasperating. I'm not going to mention Holly at all except to say that she just beyond pissed me off during the whole damn book and I had been kinda hoping she would die in the big fight, sadly that didn't happen.

Not to mention, Kami's super sleuth skills which aren't very sleuthing at all. For all her nosing around and coming up with plans she seems to be lacking in one very important point. Once she starts reading about Matthew's statue and their story with the Lynburns, her spidey senses start tingling. Good, cause mine were too and she does find out some info, but her 'research' never goes past the books. There is a whole freaking town out there and everyone with different stories and legends about the town's history and she asks NO ONE. Not even Lillian, but we do find the little she does know, because she mentions it of her own accord. Therefore that ended up being a dead end there, a very important one I'm sure.

We also have the boys. Jared, Ash and Rusty. My favorite character in these books is hands down Rusty. I love the guy. I'll be flooding this review towards the end with quotes of Rusty ;) Anyway, Ash was a totally pansy through this whole book. He was just too soft..and gooey, and just too nice to everyone. He doesn't have a backbone to speak of, and that's just sad. Then there is Jared, who has always been a little crazy, and it's obvious why he is acting like he is, but it doesn't make him any less of a jerk, but at least it was understood. And I hated the first half of this book, there was barely any actual interaction between Jared and Kami, and I missed that a lot. But that wasn't even the problem, the problem was their insurmountable insecurities. Which I was getting sick of after a while. Jared does redeem himself towards the end. The last 2 chapters are in his PoV and hell, I totally forgive him for the rest of what he did in the book.

Let's talk about the plot. I'm happy to announce it did not have the second book syndrome problem in regards to the plot. There was moving forward, and there were always plans going on, and there was a big fight at the end, and soo much death. Like I said this book was overall incredibly depressing, but it went with  everything that was happening. It never once felt unreal, you could understand why and where everyone was coming from. That doesn't mean I still don't want to kill Holly, cause I do.

With all that being said, I still liked the book, and I will be following through to it's conclusion, because there is just no way I can abandon them now. I really hope Kami gets smarter and starts asking more pertinent questions and stops being so damn insecure. Looking forward to finding out what else awaits Sorry-in-the-Vale.

Quotes!

"Well," said Kami, "consider out side. Just say no to human sacrifice! Excuse me, I have to go."

"Yes, all right," Kami said, intervening before Lillian could actually expire from annoyance at their feet. "We may be straying off topic."
"The topic isn't my stunning good looks?"
"Devastating thought they undoubtedly are," Kami told him, patting his knee, "no."
"Shame," said Rusty.

"What are you doing?" Angela complained. "Are you trying to make me jog? You know I think people who jog should be shot at midday."
"Why at midday?" Kami asked absently.
"There's no need to ever get up at dawn," Angela told her. "Not even to shoot joggers. We're going to leave my brother behind, Kami; he is one of life's born saunters."

"Rusty, you idiot," Kami said. "I told you she was an evil sorceress. So you knew all about it and you're not trying to redeem her with your love or anything, are you?" Rusty held his hand out flat and tipped it gently from side to side. "Eh. Honestly that sounds like a lot of effort."

"Maybe," he added, his voice almost too casual, "this revelation will lead you to make the sensible decision, and go for me."
"And wouldn't that be a magical thirty-six hours," Kami said. "Before you died of exhaustion."
Rusty did something unspeakable with his eyebrows. "Why, Cambridge, I am scandalized!"
"Shut up!" Kami told him. "You know what I meant. Shut up your entire face."

Lillian looked around the room. "where are the others? The Prescott girl and the good-looking one?"
"Baby," said Rusty, "I'm right here."
Lillian gave him a horrified look..

"When you called me and said bring garden shears, I really thought it might be for decapitating purposes," Said Angela. "I truly wish that had been the case."

Early Unraveling of The Chaos of Stars by Kirsten White

The Chaos of Stars - Kiersten White

Title: The Chaos of Stars

Author: Kiersten White

Publication Date: September 10, 2013

Isadora’s family is seriously screwed up.

Of course, as the human daughter of Egyptian gods, that pretty much comes with the territory. She’s also stuck with parents who barely notice her, and a house full of relatives who can’t be bothered to remember her name. After all, they are going to be around forever—and she’s a mere mortal.

Isadora’s sick of living a life where she’s only worthy of a passing glance, and when she has the chance to move to San Diego with her brother, she jumps on it. But Isadora’s quickly finding that a “normal” life comes with plenty of its own epic complications—and that there’s no such thing as a clean break when it comes to family. Much as she wants to leave her past behind, she can’t shake the ominous dreams that foretell destruction for her entire family. When it turns out there may be truth in her nightmares, Isadora has to decide whether she can abandon her divine heritage after all.

My Thoughts

First off I'm in love with that cover. It's just so beautiful!! Unfortunately the book wasn't as good as the cover. It suffered the same problem as Kiersten White's Paranormalcy Trilogy, the MC.

I actually really liked the first two books of Paranormalcy but it was during the third one that I noticed how rude and bratty Evie was, and I have the same problem with Isadora. She is incredibly rude to her parents. At first I thought she might be right about her parents not loving her after the tomb issue, and Isadora being so young at the time, I was willing to let it go. My problem is she is not 10 anymore and she completely shut off her parents. If I had been told about the tomb I would have started asking questions later. I mean her dad is the God of the Afterlife for god's sake, there had to be more to it! Which there kind of was but not in the way I was thinking, but that's ok.

I also get she might be having existential issues what with everyone being immortal and her being the only mortal in the household, but again, she should have eventually talked to her mom about it. That's why she is there! Because it's not as if they actually had a horrible relationship, they didn't. It wasn't the best obviously but she could have changed it at anytime but instead chose to be close-minded and bratty and just plain bitchy about the whole thing.

At least she starts changing towards the end so there is some character growth on her part, but it just wasn't enough for me, too little too late. Specially cause the plot was flimsy at best and it only made an actual appearance at the start when it's introduced and the end when it's concluded...The whole book is basically Isadora doing her projects and hanging out with her new friends. I liked all her friends way more than Isadora. The romance was nice and I loved Ry, but I just don't see how he could like her with how rude she always was to him.

In short, this book was basically just a fluff read with some mythology to give it some originality. While it was nice reading about some of the gods, it was all very superficial. White could have done so much with this mythology, if she had just gone more in-depth, but instead I'm left wanting so much more.

Know Not Why - Hannah Johnson
""Wow," I say, with (I like to think) the air of a levelheaded gentleman whose instinctive reaction is nothing along the lines of 'mmmmm yeah', "you're slutty when you're drunk."

"I am not." Kiss. "Drunk." Kiss. "Just happy to see you." Kiss.

My neck might, at this moment, be having an even better night than I am. "That's what all the sluts say."

"You're insufferable. I don't know why I suffer you."

"Right back atcha, baby.""
Know Not Why - Hannah Johnson
""It draws heavily from the plot of Christabel. Lots of lesbian subtext and vampirism."

"Excellent," Mitch says.

His expression is turning sappy, and God help me, God help us all, I don't think it's because of the lesbian vampires. I need to fix this. "Like porn-type excellent?"

"No," Mitch says. He throws me this minuscule, pathetic excuse for a glance before steering his eyeballs right back to Amber. "Like, awesome excellent. You should make me a book list."

"A book list?" Amber repeats, disbelieving.

Oh jeez, why not just ask her to marry you."

Another Little Piece

Another Little Piece - Kate Karyus Quinn I'm not entirely sure how I feel regarding this book. It's supposed to be a horror. It wasn't. It felt like it was a weird, strange, wanna-be horror that turned out to be a contemporary with supernatural bits thrown in.Did I like Another Little Piece? No, actually I didn't. If I wanted to read a weird contemp, I would have chosen something else. I thought Anna/liese was stupid and selfish and bratty. I couldn't connect with her. Franky/Eric was a sick asshole who in my opinion got off way too easily I don't know what the Physician is going to do with the rest of him, but idk I was thinking of more along the lines of burning in the fiery pits of hell, but maybe that's just me?As much as I wanted to like the parents, I couldn't. I honestly don't know why, can't really put my finger on it, but they just weren't doing it for me. Don't even get me started on Gwen. I'm usually ok with characters that have that kind of bubbly, rambling personality but my god she took it to a whole new level and didn't let up. Logan wasn't that much better, he was one of those characters that just tried WAY too hard and in the end came off as insincere after everything was said and done. The only saving grace as characters go was Dex. He was messed up yes, but he was doing the best he could and making the best of what he had and honestly the only character I liked in the whole book. The only horror aspect Another Little Piece had was the ritual in and of itself. The way that the transfer was done. And it wasn't actually horror, it was just downright disgusting and for the love of god WHY would you compare it to CHOCOLATE?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!! Right, so, besides that the rest was just a lot of supernatural aspects thrown in with a bit of a mystery. Which to be honest it wasn't much of a mystery. The whole thing is pretty straightforward in my opinion. Anna/liese figured it out mostly by the 20% mark, the rest is just her coming to terms with everything that she's done, which is why this was more of a contemp than anything else. During the last 20% is when we really get right back to the problem at hand. I thought the ending was all just too neatly tied up after everything that had happened. Everyone got their happy ending, which was dumb! I wanted a dark, nitty-gritty ending but nope..oh well...Btw, no one evr explained what exactly the Physician and his sisters the brujas are...Are they just really powerful witches/sorceress/something? Or are they supposed to be somekind of representation of the Fates? And my last issue with this was the writing style. It did not lend itself into allowing an easy connection between the reader and the book. The way it was told seemed almost clinical to me. It never once got a meaningful reaction out of me. I was disconnected from the book throughout it's entirety. Which didn't do it any favors what so ever.In the end, this book was just not for me. It's marketed as a YA horror when in my opinion, it isn't. It's just a contemp with dark supernatural aspects thrown in and me and contemps don't see eye to eye very much, so maybe readers who are more into that aspect will appreciate Another Little Piece much more than I did.

The Crown Conspiracy

The Crown Conspiracy - Michael J. Sullivan Would you look at that. Right after my update at 53% it picked up quite nicely :) Totally saved the book. I'll definitely keep on with the series now.

The Bitter Kingdom

The Bitter Kingdom - Rae Carson 4.5 StarsA copy was provided through Edelweiss and the Publisher in exchange for an honest reviewWe have come to the end of the line with this trilogy. Can't really say I'm too sad, not because of it was bad, as my reviews will reflect I have really enjoyed these books, but I'm not sad because the end was satisfying enough that I can accept it and let the characters and their world go.Book endings are always stressful to must of us I think. We are both excited to see how it ends and dreading it because it is the end, but also because, what if it isn't the ending we wanted it? That's a whole other layer of problems right there. Carson did a great job with Bitter Kingdom in this sense. The whole book was both predictable at some points and surprising at others, just the right mix of both, so you aren't left with complete uncertainty but also not lacking that nice feeling of being surprised. This is not to say that I didn't have any issues with it. I did. But they weren't very big ones. There was Alodia for one. I have never liked her since the first book. I don't care that she has done what she has to protect Elisa. I just can't stand the woman and unfortunately she was in this book briefly but long enough for me to get annoyed. She also gets paired up with Storm and I totally wasn't a happy camper about that, but Storm seems to be happy about it and it's not like I didn't see it coming so I had time to deal with it when the decision did come. Still, don't have to like it xDMy other issue is the service to God that Elisa is supposed to do. It was utter crap in my opinion. So damn anticlimactic. I mean she has been doing soo much for her country and then we finally get to her service to God and it turns out that it hasn't been any of the major things she has done or still has to do. No, it was just some random task that had nothing to do with anything for the moment, and I just can't accept that. The characters themselves questioned it, and I understand the whole point but I still don't like it. I would have been fine if maybe there had been some kind of epilogue showing the importance of that one thing that Elisa was tasked to do. That would have been pretty cool. Maybe Carson can write a short story afterwards? *hint hint* ;)Besides those two issues, I loved the rest of the book. There was sneaking around, fighting, death, intrigue, and of course love. Which reminds me! What the hell is wrong with Mara?! Why does she keep refusing Belén?! If the handmaiden thing is what's keeping her back, she is a a coward and an idiot, and worst than Elisa when it comes to love. So much shit they go through and she still refuses!! I just don't get it. Hector was acting all insecure at the start as well, but he got over it quickly enough thanks to Elisa being her usual stern self. I love Elisa :) Love her scheming and planning, how she gets things done, and trusts people when most others wouldn't. She totally kicked ass in this book and not just politically speaking, but literally. I specially liked how she came up with the whole plan with the Inviernos. She doesn't need a knight in shinning armor to come save her all the time. She does it herself perfectly well and it shows through out the whole book. Even when she has Hector she still doesn't under-develop into an incapable person all of a sudden cause she has a guy with her like in so many other books. She is a strong person and queen, both with and without her Godstone. While some might think that everything ended up getting tied in a neat bow, it wasn't completely neat. There was a lot of underhanded things that had to be done to get to where they are. It didn't just magically appear all of a sudden which is why I'm so satisfied with how this trilogy ended. If you are looking for a great YA Fantasy with a strong heroine then don't look any further!

Indexing

Indexing - Seanan McGuire Episode 1 - 4.5 StarsI love Seanan McGuire's InCryptid series so when I heard she was writing a serial on fairy tales, I had to give it a try. McGuire was able to give fairy tales a whole entirely different spin and she does it incredibly well.At first I was kinda lost with all the ATI reference numbers since I didn't know what they stood for but as the story progressed you start getting the hang of things. We have the ATI which is an obscure government branch that is in charge of protecting people from fairy tales, because we all know fairy tales aren't just happily ever afters. This was a really strange take on fairy tells and retellings but one that McGuire was able to pull off perfectly. Can't wait to read more about the work of the ATI Management Bureau.Episode 2 & 3 - 4 StarsEpisodes 4 - 6: 4 StarsGetting more interesting :) Stupid cliffhangers though...

The Crown of Embers

The Crown of Embers - Rae Carson 4.5 StarsI can't believe I waited so long to finally read this book. It's not like I didn't like the first one, cause I did. I'm so glad this one held up to the first one and I'm fervently hoping that Bitter Kingdom holds up it's predecessors.I'm going to start off by mentioning the things that annoyed me with this book. Get the slightly negative stuff out of the way first. First off is Elisa's insecurities with her body/image...still...This was a sore point in the first one and after Elisa having gone through the ordeals she did and ended up getting skinny, I thought it would have boosted her self esteem enough that it wouldn't be a problem. It still was, but not to the degree of the first book. I usually don't mind this kind of stuff, but it was just the way it's done that rubbed me the wrong way. I couldn't just simply dismiss it this time.Next up was how much I didn't like how Elisa let the Conde and the General maneuver her like that and just stomp all over her without some kind of lashing back. I mean we are talking about Elisa here! She is supposed to be super smart, and she is, but that beginning was not doing her any favors, but then again, I guess that was the point of this book. She needed to realize that she could rule without having to have the full power of the Godstone with her. She just needed herself.I think that's pretty much it with things I didn't like/annoyed me. There really weren't many. I liked how Belén is back and in Elisa's good graces. How we got to see some of Father Alentín, even if he wasn't able to join the adventure in this book. But most of all I liked Storm actually. Yes, the Invierno guy. Who would have thought xD I just loved how he was always so straight up with everything and yet at the same time very sneaky and still keeping his cards close to his chest. He is a complex character and I was SOO glad for what happened at the end. But really, the best part of the whole book was when Elisa finally told Ximena off. Omg I was so damn happy! Was screaming YESSS at my kindle when it happened. I couldn't stand Ximena the whole bloody time! Always in Elisa's business way more than necessary, and her whole God fanaticism behavior wasn't helping at all either. And of course there is the romance between Elisa and Hector...Ah...Hector...He is so noble and just good, but still very much a guy. "I told you I wouldn't let it interfere with my work. But every time you smile at me, and especially when you look at me the way you're looking at me right now, everything disappears." His thumb sweeps across my bottom lip, down my chin. His voice is low and dark as he says, "When it happens, I'm not guarding you anymore. Your enemy could come up behind me, and I would never know, because all I'm thinking about is how badly I want you."I wanted to strangle Elisa in the beginning for being so utterly clueless, but she got a clue quickly enough, thank god xD And that scene with them at the beach was beautiful!! "Don't you see, Elisa? I love you the way a drowning man loves air. And it would destroy me to have you just a little."So yeah, if you haven't read this series yet, get on with it already!

Magic Rises: A Kate Daniels Novel

Magic Rises - Ilona Andrews 4.5Kate Daniels and I had a rocky start. I didn't think the first book was that great, nor did it deserve the hype it had gotten, but my friends insisted that they all got progressively better. So I finally relented and read book two. It was a definite improvement. By the 3rd one I in love with Kate, Curran and their world. This book was no exception. I loved it!This book had a bit of everything. Action, romance, sexy scenes, backstabbing, mysteries, politics, humor and death. Yes I said death. So be prepared! The whole book was some very intricate maneuvering to get to Kate, with of course some added bonus of the subplot having new magical creatures. I like how Andrews managed both plot threads at the same time. They were both separate but together and they meshed very nicely. We also have the addition of the new people to Kate's 'team' in a way, and they were all connected with each other. What I truly love about these books are the characters. Specifically Kate and Derek. Yeah I said Derek and not Curran, sue me! xD I love that Kate is smart and doesn't just suddenly have amnesia when her brain power is needed to solve the problems like in so many books. Not only is she smart, but she is mouthy. Love all her comebacks xD She is badass and she compassionate, and she'll do what has to be done to make her people safe. Even when she was having issues with Curran, she would never have turned her back on the shapeshifters. They were hers now and she going to do her damnest to keep them safe. Then there is Derek. He has become Kate's backup and right hand man. He is loyal to her, and even after all the crap he went through he still manages to keep it together and still be one hell of a back up. I would love if Andrews wrote a novella or a whole book with Derek being the MC, like they did with Andrea. I can't really go anymore in depth about the plot than I already did without spoiling something, and I really don't want to do that. It would just ruin the whole thing and that's just no fun xD I had been in a bit of a book slump when I picked this one up, but it managed not only to keep my interest to get me out of the slump, that's how awesome it is xD

Truly, Madly, Deadly

Truly, Madly, Deadly - Hannah Jayne I have been on an adult Fantasy kick lately and well going back to this YA, just didn't do it for me. I couldn't deal with the usual, popular crap, and the silly high school drama, even if it was mixed with the murders and stuff. Just didn't do it for me.

Lover Mine (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 8)

Lover Mine - J.R. Ward I love John! And I'm glad Xhex finally got most of her crap together. I even liked Lash somewhat. My second favorite book in the series so far :)

The Weight of Souls (Strange Chemistry)

The Weight of Souls - Bryony Pearce I hadn't been expecting to enjoy this book quite as much as I did. I thought the romance would be trite because of the who she was falling for, but this book has so much actually going for it.First let's talk about the curse. The blurb doesn't really say much except the bare facts. I thought the explanation about the curse would be something along the lines of every other paranormal out there. But then almost right away you find out that the curse is quite literally a curse, put on my freaking Anubis! Yes, this book deals with Egyptian mythology, and I was NOT expecting that at all (and now looking at the cover more closely, I really should have lol). I liked how the book was written, with excerpts of the story about how the curse came about in between the present day problems that Taylor was dealing with. I was also pleasantly surprised that the curse was even more complicated than you first think, and there are still quite a few unanswered questions about it once you reach the end. This book deals with a lot of difficult subjects. We have bullying because Taylor is half Chinese. We have a secret society that is actually quite far reaching and very dangerous, and we have the usual teenage problems, friends, romance and family. At first I really didn't like her dad. I knew he was trying to help but the way he was doing it was incredibly counter productive. Taylor also had friend issues, as in she only had the one friend and because of her curse it was hard to keep that friendship, but this was mostly Taylor's fault through out the story.Lastly we have the romance. As I mentioned before I hadn't been expecting much from it, but I found it to be really sweet. Taylor and Justin start confiding with each other and helping each other out and he finally realizes why Taylor is the way she is, but not only does he accept her, but actually starts protecting her as well. As for the plot itself, it was great. The pacing was just right. There was something always going on, whether it was her personal issues or her actual investigation about Justin's death. It was a great mix between a mysterious, deadly curse, a dangerous secret society and life's problems.I didn't have high expectations for this one going in, but it managed to surprise me with it's depth on multiple accounts, and I'm glad I got the chance to review it.

All Our Yesterdays

All Our Yesterdays - Cristin Terrill I'm not sure what to make of this book ultimately. I love time travel books so I was excited to read this one. I don't know what I was expecting but it certainly wasn't what I got.Marina was an incredibly hard character to like. Actually, I really didn't like her throughout pretty much the whole book. Sure she had some growth towards the end, but it was too little, too late. The way she treated Finn and Luz...Just no... I just couldn't stand her. I also disliked James. He was unstable from the get go, and not the kind where I would have felt some kind of sympathy or compassion or pity. Anything to balance it out. The only likable characters were Finn and Luz. Without them I would have stopped reading this a long time ago. Finn was so sweet and caring and just such a great person. Sadly, Luz was only there during the beginning, so really Finn was the saving grace.I also didn't like how the story was set up. We kept getting flashbacks from Finn and Em about what had happened to them, but not once could I come up with how it all really went down. I couldn't connect the how of their situation had come about from what it was before, because as much as James was unstable I didn't think he was that stupid to have been manipulated like that, but I guess I was wrong. So what was the point of all the flashbacks? They don't even tell us how Em became such a badass. Nothing at all was explained till about the last 5% and by then I just didn't really care. It was also a very unsatisfying explanation and that ending was also a cop out.Throughout the book we are told that James = Time machine = Doomed World. Therefore, Em + Finn have to save the world by killing James. But it was never once explained HOW it all goes down. How James built the machine, how they started using it as a weapon, how that even worked really and why James let it all happen. This was, like I said before, all explained in the last 5% of the book. Too little too late.Let's talk about the time travel concept that was used here. I didn't get it. I mean theoretically when they explained it, I got it. But I just don't see how it could all actually work out. It seems as if every time they used the machine to go back in time it's as if you had reset time for a short period. Therefore time starts from the point in which you went back. If nothing significant changes in the amount of time that Time gives them before they get killed off, the future stays the same, but if it does change before that person gets taken by Time then it all resets from that point on? It's all just really strange and hard to follow, because I still can't comprehend how all that would work, with how much they actually change. This is also ties in with the silly ending. Silly because I just don't buy it. Young Finn died before young James did which means that with everything that we are being told Finn should stay dead, but instead James stays dead and Finn somehow gets to live? I don't get it! Why point that out specifically (Em and Finn were discussing this exactly before they confronted James), when you are not going to even follow through? It's not like I wanted Finn dead. He was the only character I truly liked, but I just can't accept that ending either. So yeah, this book by no means is unreadable, but there were just entirely too many things I didn't like in the end.
